Objectives
- Evaluate performance of all Fraxinus provenances and populations established since 1988 in four countries. Identify promising provenances and individuals; publish the results, make selections and provisional recommendations on seed sources to assist national authorities in complying with the new EU directive.
- Establish a Europe wide provenance trial (in six countries) using material from the European species range (minimum 30 provenances/country).
- To characterise the genetic diversity, gene flow, spatial genetic structure and hybridisation patterns of Fraxinus populations and seed orchards using developed microsatellite and chloroplast DNA markers (6-8 nuclear and 5 chloroplast).
- Within populations of Fraxinus excelsior and F. angustifolia.
- Compare genetic variation between each species.
- Compare seed orchard trees to the donor population.
Construct a distribution maps of chloroplast haplotypes of Fraxinus on three scales; European, regional (fine scale on two populations one Central European, one Western) , and on a local scale in a in zone of transition between diverse types.
