Cathal Buckley

Cathal commenced work with the Rural Economy Research Centre (RERC) in 2007. He previously had been a Walsh Fellow within the centre and worked in the agricultural industry for a number of years. His research interests include agricultural, environmental and natural resource economics. Cathal’s PhD research used non-market valuation techniques to estimate recreational demand for walking on specific commonage sites in the west of Ireland. As part of his research he evaluated the economic potential of open-air outdoor recreation associated with improved public access to farm land for walking.
Cathal will provide information on and analysis of the socio-economic impact of the implementation of the measures contained in the National Action Programme under the Nitrates Directive (S.I. 378 of 2006) on farms in the catchments. Particular emphasis will be placed on the attitudes and awareness of the farming community to water pollution issues, the measures used to address them and the economic impact of changing agricultural practises to comply with the measures.
