Environmental sustainability is now regarded as one of the cornerstones of agri-food industry in Ireland. Irish agriculture is entering a new growth era, with the removal of milk quota, the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and the global increase in demand or food, particularly livestock produce.
Food Harvest 2020 gives a profoundly new role to the concept of environmental sustainability in Irish agriculture. It puts sustainability at the heart of the strategy to deliver growth and added value to Irish produce. At an international level, sustainability is now a key element of competitiveness and consumer expectations.
Ireland is in a very strong starting position to capitalise on our green credentials, with Irish dairy products having the lowest carbon footprint in the EU and our proportion of ‘clean’ waters being fourth highest in the EU.
