National Forestry Demonstration on Small Scale Harvesting and Extraction

Teagasc and the Forest Service are organising a national demonstration on small scale forest harvesting and extraction at Ballyhaise College in Co. Cavan on Wednesday May 27. This event is mainly aimed at landowners who have small woodlands at or near the age of first thinning. This event will provide information on the thinning and management of the forest crop. The following will be demonstrated and discussed on the day:

  • Growing trees for quality timber
  • Timing of first thinning
  • Preparation for thinning
  • Getting the job done
  • Small scale harvesting and extraction methods
  • The benefits of a co-operative approach
  • Produce end use (fencing posts, fuel wood, chips, etc.)

The main emphasis on the day will be on extraction methods using readily available machinery like a tractor and trailer forwarder, tractor and winch, tractor and grab skidder, ATV and trailer and other methods. There will also be fuel wood processors and chippers on show. Information will be provided on the preparation for thinning like felling licences, roading, assessing the need for thinning, chainsaw training etc.

Thinning your plantation is an essential investment for the future of your crop. This is a great opportunity to acquire the know-how to get the job done. The event is free and promises to be a very informative day.
