Wednesday 30 June 2010
Teagasc and the Forest Service are organising a national demonstration of small scale forest harvesting and extraction at Mount St. Joseph’s Abbey, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary on Wednesday, 30 June 2010.
This event is aimed at landowners who have small woodlands which are at, or near, first thinning stage.
The event will provide information on the thinning and management of the forest crops both in conifers and broadleaves. This event will also give contractors who have equipment that is used for small scale harvesting and extraction an opportunity to exhibit and demonstrate their machinery.
The following will be demonstrated and discussed on
the day:

The main emphasis will be on extraction methods using readily available machinery such as tractor and trailer forwarder, tractor and winch, tractor and grab skidder, ATV and trailer, mini forwarders and other methods. An important aspect of the day will be on Health and Safety in the forest, especially when it comes to harvesting and extraction. Proper presentation of the timber products both in the forest and on roadside will be discussed.
Information will be provided on the preparation for thinning like felling licences, roading, assessing the need for thinning, chainsaw training etc. Trade stands will also be present on the day.
