June Deadline for Teagasc Courses

07 May 2004

Young people interested in pursuing careers in agriculture and horticulture have been reminded that the closing date for applying for college courses is Friday, 4 June.

The courses which commence next September in six agricultural colleges and three horticultural colleges are all nationally accredited by the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC).

Announcing details, Paddy Browne, Head of Training with Teagasc, said the courses provide the ideal training for young people opting for careers in farming, food horticulture, landscape horticulture, organic food production, forestry, horses and in the services and processing sectors of the agri-food industry.

Paddy Browne said an additional attraction of the courses is the opportunity for graduates to progress to third level certificate, diploma and degree courses.

“Completion of these Teagasc courses will provide young people with the skills to succeed in whatever branch of the agri-food sector they wish to follow. They also open the door to other jobs and career paths which graduates can follow in conjunction with farming,” he said.

He said a significant number of participants in Teagasc training come from non-farming and urban backgrounds. This applies particularly to courses in landscape horticulture, horses and forestry where job opportunities are good at present.

The following is an outline of the main courses which commence in September and the contact details for the colleges which provide them.
