Wide Range of Jobs Available in Horticulture

Speaking at the Teagasc Careers Day at the College of Amenity Horticulture, Mr. Paul Cusack, College Principal said that “occupations in horticulture are varied and reflect the range of aptitudes and interests of graduates among which landscaping, garden design, sportsturf management, nursery production, garden centre business and parks and garden management are the most frequently chosen occupation paths. A horticultural career can bring nature, science and art together to form an environment that is both functional and attractive”.
The Teagasc College of Amenity Horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens forms the perfect setting for a horticultural course with the huge range of plants and all the facilities of this wonderful garden at a student’s disposal. Expert staff guide students to achieve their best in their chosen occupation. The College provides courses at both degree and certificate levels. The Batchelor of Science in Horticulture degree course is conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. “The strengths of both establishments combine to give students a complete range of skills and knowledge in Horticulture, Science, Business and Management”, said Mr. Cusack.
A work placement period is also included to enable students acquire a firm grasp of actual horticultural practice. Students can choose from a wide range of options within the course. The Certificate courses provide a comprehensive system of horticultural knowledge and skills together with practical work experience. These are available at three levels with progression possibilities to degree level. Certificate courses are also available in Sports turf management.
