Livestock Vulnerable in Severe Weather - Teagasc

24 November 2005

Teagasc today have issued a reminder to livestock farmers to be especially vigilant over the next few days if weather conditions deteriorate.

According to Pat Boyle, Director of Advisory Services in Teagasc, young animals and pregnant animals are most at risk.  He said farmers should, where possible, consider housing stock.  Where this is not possible livestock should be moved to dryer, more sheltered fields on farms. Supplementary feeding may be required as extreme cold conditions will put more demands on the energy requirements of all stock, especially young stock.

Mr. Boyle urged farmers, who are concerned about their stock during the cold spell to contact their local Teagasc adviser.
