Teagasc Grassland & EU Water Framework Conference 2008

Overhead Presentations and Posters Presented at: International Conference: "Sustainable grassland systems in Europe and the EU Water Framework Directive"
Conference Location: Teagasc, Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford, Ireland
Date: 12th – 14th November 2008
This Website provides abstracts of the 21 invited papers presented at the Conference. In addition, the invited paper presentations and the posters that are available are shown. This will provide a source of information for people interested in agriculture and the EU Water Framework Directive. The abstracts of the Conference were published: Teagasc Grassland & EU Water Famework Conference 2008, Abstracts – Sustainable grassland systems in Europe and the EU Water Framework Directive. Publ. Teagasc, Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford. Eds. H Tunney and O Fenton, 2008, ISBN number-10-1-84170-523-3. 61 pages.
Most of the invited papers will be published in Tearmann, the Irish Journal of Agri-environmental Research (the editors responsible are Olaf Schmidt, UCD and Rogier Schulte, Teagasc).
Conference Background and Scope
European Water Policy has undergone a restructuring process, and the Water Framework Directive (WFD) adopted in 2000 will set the objectives for water protection for the future:(http://ec.europa.eu/environment/water/water-framework/).
The WFD is a new tool for protecting water quality and by 2015 all waters are expected to meet good quality standards. This is a challenge for all stakeholders including agriculture. The Conference was an opportunity to look forward and be aware of and prepared for the challenges that may lie ahead. The Conference attempted to provide a roadmap for grassland agriculture that is both economically and environmentally sustainable.
