Annual Walsh Fellowships Seminar

RDS, Dublin, Wednesday, 11 November 2009

Innovation

This year the Seminar had a theme – “The Walsh Fellowship Scheme’s contribution to Innovation” and the Guest Speaker on the day was Ms. Damini Kumar of NUI Maynooth and Ireland’s ambassador for the “European Year of Creativity and Innovation”.

The initiative of selecting this theme for the 2009 Walsh Fellowship Seminar was to encourage and support innovation across Teagasc. As an applied research organisation, we want to encourage our Walsh Fellows to consider not only the new knowledge, technologies or practices that are generated from their research but also to reflect on which of our stakeholders or clients will use these outputs, how the outputs will be transferred to the stakeholders or clients and the benefits our stakeholders and clients will get from using these outputs.

In doing so, the Walsh Fellows will be actively contributing to Teagasc’s mission “to support science-based innovation in the agri-food sector and wider bio-economy that will underpin their profitability, competitiveness and sustainability”.

We understand innovation to be the creative exploitation of new and existing knowledge and ideas. This can take many forms. For example, innovation may consist of either doing new and better things or doing existing things in new and better ways. In essence, innovation is about putting knowledge, technologies and practices into use in such ways that our stakeholders and clients benefit from them.
