PhD studentship in Microbial Food Safety

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Food Safety Department at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15 to work on a research project entitled “Transfer of human pathogens from organic waste streams to the horticultural food chain”

In brief, the project will examine the prevalence of key foodborne pathogens in composts derived from domestic and commercial organic waste material on the island of Ireland throughout a year long period. The survival of foodborne pathogens in, and their transcriptomic response to, the composting environment will also be assessed.

This project will run for three years, in collaboration with the Teagasc Horticulture Development Unit and the Centre for Food Safety in UCD.

Candidates should hold an honours Bachelor of Science degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in Microbiology or a related subject. Prior experience in microbiological and molecular techniques would be an advantage.
