Moorepark 2019 –National Teagasc Dairy open day

Séamus Nolan,

Dairy Advisor

Teagasc Castlerea

The now biennial Teagasc Moorepark National Open day takes place on Wednesday July 3rd this year.  With a lot of discussion in media recently in relation to the environmental impact of agriculture the focus of this year’s event is “Building a Sustainable Dairy Industry”.

The Irish dairy industry has increased milk output by 60% since 2015 through a combination of additional cows and increased output per cow. As a Teagasc Adviser I operate within the Roscommon Longford advisory region.  From June 2014 to June 2018 dairy cow numbers in the region have increased by 25.7% (source ICBF). This indicates that while most of the additional cows may be in the southern region, significant expansion has taken place countrywide.  This expansion has created challenges primarily in relation to Irelands commitments to reduce emissions and improve water quality and biodiversity but also in relation to the availability of a skilled labour force.

Moorepark ’19 will highlight the various technologies and practices available to underpin future farm and sector profitability and sustainability. The event will feature a number of technology villages focussing on grazing management, production systems, Milk quality, Next generation breeding, Infrastructure, Labour efficiency and Health and Safety.  A special forum titled “Meeting the challenges and opportunities of continued Expansion” will involve a panel discussion facilitated by Sharon Ní Bheoláin from RTÉ.  Key industry partners will also be present on the day.

Teagasc Moorepark is a world renowned research centre and this is an excellent opportunity for members of the public to get an insight into the numerous projects being undertaken at the centre.  The open day is relevant to all dairy families and stakeholders and will provide an updated roadmap to support profitable dairy systems while addressing the challenges we face over the next decade. Moorepark is located just off the M8 motorway outside Fermoy (Eircode P61C996).  The event is guaranteed not to disappoint. I hope to see you there!
