Teagasc Roscommon Sheep Seminar 2023
By Sean Doorley,
Beef & Sheep Advisor,
Teagasc Longford.
We are delighted to announce that the Teagasc Sheep Seminar takes place in the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon Town on Thursday 19th January at 8pm. This is the first in-person seminar since 2020, as the annual event has run as an online webinar for the last two years. Advisors from the local Teagasc office will be speaking on a number of topics relevant to sheep farmers.
First the newly launched Sheep Improvement 2023 has just commenced. Advisors will be outlining details of the scheme and what commitments farmers have to make to ensure they secure their payments for this year. There will be a discussion on the various sheep health and welfare requirements of the scheme.
Secondly local advisors will be giving an update on the progress of the Teagasc BETTER sheep farm participant Shane Moore. Shane and his family farms near Athleague, Co. Roscommon where they run a lowland sheep enterprise alongside a weanling to store cattle system. Over the last number of years Shane’s flock has made progress in the areas of breeding, sheep health and grassland.
Finally the whole area of the Nitrates Directive and how it will impact sheep farmers will be examined. In 2022 Ireland launched its Fifth Nitrates Action Programme 2022-2025. There are changes in the areas of slurry management, application of chemical fertilisers and stocking rates to name a few. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to meeting you all again.
