The specific objective of this project is to develop a proposal for a long-term research and innovation partnership between Europe and Africa. The focus is on the improvement of the food and nutrition security and the livelihoods of African farmers by exploring and exploiting the rich diversity of pathways leading to sustainable intensification of African agro-food systems, with support of the relevant policy environment. The partnership proposal:
- describes the scientific and innovation domains that need further research to identify and implement effective pathways (the what),
- identifies the value for both continents in addition to ongoing partnerships and activities (the why), and
- suggest financial and governance structures that can adequately support the partnership (the how).
The partnership proposal has been developed and submitted for EU funding under Horizon 2020 together with relevant stakeholder communities including research, private sector, civil-society organizations and governments in Europe and Africa. The envisaged partnership may make use of existing instruments like ERA-Net, Joint Programming Initiatives (JPI) or Article 185. As the partnership will be rooted in the policy environment, specific attention will be paid to engage the national and regional policy makers.
