The research group focusses on:

  • biodiversity and ecosystem function in grassland systems, and role of diversity in buffering ecosystem functions and services from environmental change
  • development of methodologies to assess the sustainability of agriculture
  • implementation of methods to incorporate biodiversity and farmland habitats into industry-led assessments of sustainability
  • agricultural management of habitats in High Nature Value farming systems

John is an experienced supervisor of PhD and postdoctoral researchers. He was supervisor and host of two previous Marie Curie fellows. He is also closely involved in the design and implementation of development programmes for early career researchers.
