Project Title: Optimizing annual sow output by increasing the number of viable piglets born alive and reducing pre-weaning mortality through nutritional management of the sow

Overview: My name is Hazel and I am a UCD Animal Science graduate, hailing from Co. Wicklow. My PhD project is focused on maternal feeding strategies that are hypothesized to improve sow milk quality, lactation feed intake and reproductive performance. The novel feeding strategies that I used also aimed to increase piglet birth-weight, vitality, survival and lifetime growth. To date, I have conducted three sow nutrition trials that studied the effects of an L-carnitine supplement, sugar beet pulp inclusion and incremental dietary energy density in lactation. I see my future career in animal research and I would love to pursue a career in academia. I fell in love with teaching this year when delivering lectures to UCD Agricultural Science students and hope to get a lecturer position in the future. I am a huge sports enthusiast, with a strong background in rugby and rowing.
