Project Title: Multi Allelic Genotyping-By-Sequencing (MA-GBS) to improve genomic selection models in forage

Overview: Genomic selection (GS) is beginning to revolutionise plant breeding, thanks to the availability of low cost genotyping assays, like Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS). In forage species such as perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), initial studies evaluating the potential of GS have been positive, even for traits with a relatively low heritability. In perennial ryegrass, the most important temperate forage grass in Ireland and New Zealand, efforts to implement GS are underway. Perennial ryegrass is extremely diverse at the sequence level, with multiple polymorphisms occurring over very short distances. We aim to take advantage of this to improve the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of GS through advancing of statistical methodologies. It is anticipated that our approach will lead to improvements in the accuracies of GS, in turn leading to increased genetic gain for traits such as forage yield and quality.
