Project Title: Lameness in pasture-based dairy herds in Ireland
Overview: I grew up on a dairy farm in England and moved to Ireland in October 2018 to start my PhD at Teagasc Moorepark. Since moving to Ireland I have also taken up football with Grange and represented Teagasc in the LGFA Interfirm Blitz in Dublin.
My PhD will look into lameness prevalence, common hoof lesion types and risk factors for lameness in Irish pasture-based dairy herds. Part of my study will also include a randomly controlled study to test treatment and prevention methods for lameness. This study will allow advice to be provided to farmers and the industry on the best approaches to prevent and treat lameness, ultimately reducing lameness prevalence in Irish dairy herds.
