Project Title: Unravelling the effects of organic and inorganic amendments in soil-Cadmium speciation and its uptake by crops

Overview: Cadmium (Cd) is an unwanted element in the human body, as excess exposure can have toxic effects on kidneys, respiratory and skeletal systems. Dietary intake is the greatest source of human Cadmium exposure, with a significant proportion from eating potatoes. In a previous Teagasc research project, a risk assessment model to determine the probability of Cadmium concentration exceeding the maximum level in potato was developed. Specific soil amendments for reducing Cadmium were tested, and although up to 40% reduction was observed, the results were not consistent over the tested soils.

In a collaborative project between Teagasc and Wageningen University & Research, Yuwei will examine how different soil amendments reduce Cadmium and develop a model for precise prediction of Cadium uptake by potato plants. The model will be tested in pot and field experiments.
