Project Title: Transformation of Sitka spruce stands to Continuous Cover Forestry (TranSSFor Project)
Overview: Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) is an approach to sustainable forest management that creates irregular structure stands and avoids clear-felling. It is widely used in several European countries where there is a need to manage woodlands for timber production and a wider range of ecosystem services.
The TranSSFor project (2017-2022) was initiated in 2010 to study the process of transformation of planted Sitka spruce stands to CCF in Ireland. The study compares three approaches to stand thinning: low (the standard method in even-aged management), crown and graduated density thinning. The latter two regimes are not widely applied at present but are associated with stand transformation by increasing stand structural diversity and supporting natural regeneration.
The TranSSFor project is the first operational study of stand transformation in Sitka spruce stands in Ireland. Results are expected to inform future policy and research, and support evidence-based forestry practices.
