Project title: Factors influencing abatement technology uptake on Irish dairy farms to mitigate their Greenhouse Gas emissions
Overview: Úna is investigating the factors influencing abatement technology uptake among Irish dairy farmers and the most appropriate and efficient intervention to overcome these factors/barriers. The technologies being investigated are those which mitigate greenhouse gas emissions on Irish dairy farms; dairy EBI, grazing season, clover use, protected urea, use low emission slurry spreaders.
The primary goal of this project is to gain more knowledge in the factors influencing the decision making process of Irish farmers and evaluate how a co-designed Knowledge Transfer programme would best encourage dairy farmers to uptake mitigating technologies.
Co-design and training intervention are design pillars which shape Úna’s work and help to tackle the ever growing concern of climate change within our agricultural industry.
Úna is originally from a mixed enterprise farm situated outside Gorey in County Wexford. Besides from her studies, Úna’s interests lie in playing camogie for her club and county, food enterprise and journalism. Úna graduated from UCD with a first class honours degree in Food and Agricultural Business Management. During her time with UCD, Úna travelled to the USA where she completed a semester studying abroad at Iowa State University. Úna also won three Great Agri-Food Debating awards with UCD, was awarded best speaker for two consecutive years and captained the Belfield team to victory in her final year.
While she has a broad interest base in agriculture her passion has always been in communication and environmental issues, hence her choice to further her studies in the industry.
