Science Week 2021 - Additional activities
The Festival of Farming and Food
Have you ever wondered what a career in science is like? Our scientists will link up with school classes where they will explain what they work on and how they got to where they are in their careers. Teachers interested in arranging a speaker can email us at ScienceWeek@teagasc.ie with their request.
Ever wondered how scientists study cows in the field? Did you know that research cows wear devices very like our human smart watches and Fitbits? During this fun, web-based game you can follow Hallie, Josie, Gus and Hefin, the VistaMilk research cows as they go about their day. During the game you will use simple coding exercises to figure out what they are doing and help the scientist read the data.
This game can be played via any internet browser but if you would like one of our scientists to come help you and your classmates with the game in your classroom email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a class visit (virtual or in-person subject to availability).
Aimed at teachers, this box of experiments, which was co-designed with primary school teachers from the STINT teacher internship programme, contains everything you need for curriculum led activities around agriculture and dairy for your classroom. A limited number of experiment packs are available for the following year groups:
- Junior and Senior infants
- 1st and 2nd class
- 3rd and 4th class

Plant experimental packs
Our scientists at Teagasc Crops Research Centre in Carlow have developed a fun and educational experimental pack for primary schools. Students will get petri dishes with media, cotton swab and an experimental manual. You will also get a leaf cube to colour and plant disease identification card game. Kids will perform an experiment under supervision from their teachers, you will get material to guide teachers to run the experiments.
A fun quiz will be held on Kahoot to celebrate the international year of fruit and vegetables. The winners will receive a lemon-powered clock. This quiz is aimed at primary level at participating schools.
Have you ever wondered what is a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is like? These short videos feature our scientists at work, talking about what a typical day is like, what sparked their interest in science and how their career path progressed - Watch Here
I’m a Scientist is an online, student-led STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) enrichment activity. It connects school students with scientists through energetic real-time text based chats.
Ewe Want to Know About Sheep?
Secondary schools student are invited to Teagasc Athenry in Galway to find out all about the science of sheep. You will learn about the work of the parasitology laboratory and how scientific techniques are being used to solve problems caused by round worms and liver fluke in sheep and their effect on sheep health. You will find out about how genomics is used to detect and identify sheep pests. You will also get to meet our sheep breeds and find out about their typical features and role in Irish farming.
