Amanda Crescencia Sithole
Project Title: New Protein Value chains: Pathways to sustainable models
Overview: Amanda is currently undertaking a research study that focuses on the development of new plant-based protein value chains, as well as sustainable business models in Ireland. The research aims to evaluate the current state of plant-based protein value chains in the country, identify new opportunities for such value chains, and upgrade existing ones to shift from producing crops for animals to producing crops for human consumption. This shift is crucial to diversify the intake of plant-based protein production and promote a more sustainable food system. Amanda's research study is part of a larger collaborative project called Protein-I, which aims to future-proof Ireland's food system. The overall goal of Protein-I is to engage in an interdisciplinary project that spans from crop production to human health, paying particular attention to the development of a rural (bio)-economy. By developing sustainable protein value chains in rural areas, the project hopes to promote economic growth while also promoting environmental sustainability and public health.
