Project Title: Predix: Rapid Growth Media Analysis by way of Spectral Techniques
Overview: I am a Walsh Scholar currently pursuing a PhD at Teagasc Ashtown Food Research Centre, registered with Trinity College Dublin. My research is part of the Predix project, focusing on the rapid analysis of growth media using advanced spectral techniques. My work aims to optimise tools like X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy for portable, non-destructive, and cost-effective field applications. These innovations address the challenges of inconsistent nutrient content and physiochemical properties in peat-alternative growth media, offering sustainable solutions for professional horticulture.
I hold a first-class honours bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. My undergraduate achievements laid the foundation for my interdisciplinary expertise, combining food science and analytical chemistry.
My current research addresses a critical need for sustainable peat alternatives, balancing biological stability, nutrient predictability, and environmental impact. By advancing rapid, non-destructive analytical methods, my work supports growers and manufacturers in maintaining consistency, quality, and food safety in growth media production.
