Derrypatrick Farm Notes Week of October 8th

General Details

    • Steers and heifers were housed on Wednesday 3rd October
      • Steers and heifers were weighed at housing (Table 1)
    • Weaning began on Friday 5th October
      • 41 calves have been weaned to date
    • Empty cows have been culled

Animal performance

  • Weaning began on Friday 5th October
    • Weaning is undertaken in a gradual process over a two week period
    • Seven cows are removed per group at any one time
      • Calves remain in their group with access to grass and creep feed
      • Cows will be returned to grass
    • All cows and calves were weighed last week (Table 2) and calves will be weighed again at the time of weaning
    • Calves are currently being offered 1 kg per head concentrates through creep feeders

  • Steers are currently being built up to 5kg of concentrates
    • The aim is to finish the steers in February/March
  • Heifers are currently being built up to 4kg of concentrates
    • The aim is to finish the heifers in December

Grass

  • Farm was walked on Monday and average farm cover was approximately 750 kg DM/ha
  • The farm currently has 22 days grass available
  • Graze outs have been ideal for closing

Autumn rotation planner

  • The 60:40 autumn rotation planner is being implemented on the farm
  • 25% of the farm has been closed to date
  • Paddocks that will be grazed first next year were closed last week
    • The drier and more sheltered paddocks were targeted first for closing as they will be the first grazed next spring

 Weekly planner

  • Do weekly grass covers and monitor re-growths closely
  • Wean the remainder of the calves
  • Return cows to grass
