Michael & Niall Biggins May update

The farm is divided into 4 mobs on pasturebase Ireland. These are separate farmlets with their own stock for the majority of the year. The average growth rate for the month of May is 78kgs DM/Ha while demand is 36kgs. At the start of the year the average farm cover was low at below 500kgs/DM/ha but this has recovered to over 900kgs/DM/ha for the month of May. This surge in growth has led to surpluses and these paddocks have been taken out as bales during the course of the month.

The farm is walked every Sunday and measurements are inputted onto Pasturebase. As there are 28 days ahead on the 30th May more paddocks will need to be removed as bales silage. At the beginning of May , grassland areas with a dock/weed problem was sprayed with Forefront T .

The suckler herd is divided into 2 groups as the farm is fragmented and a bull runs with each group. An easy calving saler bull will be used on the maiden heifers which are in another separate group also. The average Eurostar value for the heifers is €121 – making them all 5 star heifers.
