Farm Plan

A detailed farm plan was drawn up for the farm and reviewed annually. A summary of details of the plan are laid out below:

Breeding policy

  • Develop a maternal/terminal reciprocal cross
  • Use high index rams
  • Select replacements from high performance
  • Target output of >1.7 lambs weaned/ewe joined from ewe flock

Grassland

  • Soil fertility – Addressed in nutrient management plan
  • Implement a paddock system – permanent and temporary divisions
  • Reseeding programme implemented
  • Increase the proportion of home produced forage – more after grass in system
  • Grass measuring and budgeting – using Pasturebase

Flock management

  • Streamline flock production system
  • Retain extra ewe lambs to sell as hogget’s
  • Improve silage quality
  • Target nutritional management
  • Defined winter management plan
