Choosing a Variety

The Current Spring Bean recommended variety lists are available from the DAFM website: DAFM Spring Bean Variety List

Choosing the variety that is most suited to your local environmental conditions and your farming system is a key element in producing a profitable break crop.

You could also discuss with other local farmers how a particular variety performed with them – this is valuable information as it is an indication of how the variety actually performs in your area and is therefore relevant.

Pay attention to earliness of ripening and resistance to lodging characteristics.

A short strawed variety is preferable to a longer strawed one. Choose a variety that resists lodging and ripens early as it usually stands better, allows better air circulation within the crop and so reduces disease build-up and suffers less mechanical damage during spraying operations.
