Rats Tail Fescue
Rat’s-tail fescue (Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C.Gmel) is a relatively new weed on Irish tillage farms. It is an annual grass from the Poaceae family.
Germination period occurs intermittently throughout the year, except in the summer. The seeds germinate close to the surface (no deeper than 1.5 cm). Similar to many other grasses, seed dormancy is minimal, leading to rapid germination of seed stocks. Flowering takes place from May to July.
Identification:
- The seeds have a terminal awn, which can be up to three times longer than the seed itself.
- Seed production varies depending on the environment, ranging from 500 to 5000 seeds per plant.
- Seeds do not remain viable in the soil for an extended period.
