Woodland Creation on Public Lands Scheme

Encouraging public bodies to establish new native woodlands on suitable bare land

Brief Overview

The purpose of the Woodland Creation on Public Lands Scheme is to encourage public bodies to establish new native woodlands on suitable bare land.

Native woodlands are an important part of Ireland’s natural, historical and cultural heritage, and are unique in terms of their biodiversity. They provide many ecosystem services, including carbon capture, the protection and enhancement of water quality, wider habitat linkage, landscape enhancement, and opportunities for outdoor recreation, which itself promotes contact with the natural world, physical and mental well-being, and outdoor learning.

The scheme aims to conserve nature by promoting the establishment of permanent non-commercial native woodlands on public land.

The scheme is aimed at all public bodies such as government departments and state-sponsored organisations, higher education authorities and local authorities.

The scheme comprises four separate funding elements. Planting Elements 1 and 2 relate to native woodland planting, and Recreation Elements 3 and 4 (both optional) relate to recreational facilities.

The Woodland Creation on Public Lands Scheme is primarily aimed at the creation of new native woodlands (under Elements 1 and 2). The scheme also includes funding for recreational development (under Elements 3 and 4), but this application of the scheme is optional in nature, to reflect situations where the Applicant may not wish to engage in recreational development, or where the site does not lend itself to this use.
