The Business of Forestry: how to sell timber

Talking Timber 2021

Talking Timber 2021 – the Teagasc annual timber marketing event aims to support forest owners in harvesting their conifer forests. In its ninth year now, this year’s theme is "The Business of Forestry: how to sell timber".

'Virtual Talking Timber’ was broadcast live on Tuesday 15 June at 7pm.The format is a mixture of short, on-site videos interspersed with live panel discussions. Viewers attending the live broadcast have opportunity to ask questions during a live Q&A session.

Topics - how to sell timber

With more and more private forests reaching various thinning stages and clearfell age, it is important that the harvested timber is sold successfully.

How do you sell your timber successfully? Forest owners need to ask the right questions before harvesting goes ahead to maximise their conifer forests’ potential value.

This live event discusses questions such as:

  • I want to sell timber, where do I start?
  • Do I need a written contract? What should be in it?
  • Do I need to measure my timber before selling?
  • Do I have tax obligations? What about VAT?

Forestry personnel from Teagasc and the Forestry Division of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine together with a forest owner and a forestry consultant discuss timber harvesting. The event focuses primarily on second and third thinning and the market requirements for quality timber and best monetary return to the owner.

Financial and taxation issues in relation to timber sales are discussed by IFAC.
