Talking Timber 2024
Know Your Forest
- Great National Ballykisteen Golf Hotel, Limerick Junction, Co Tipperary E34 VK12
- Thursday, 14 March 2024 (9.30 am - 2:30 pm) with registration from 9.30 am to 10.00 am
Background
Teagasc's annual conifer timber marketing event focuses on building awareness of the timber products and economic returns that forest owners can realise from their forests.
With many private forests on the pathway to producing high quality, large volume logs and many other products and services, forest owners need to know the value of this resource. Appropriate inventory and information about standing timber and their potential are crucial when assessing, valuing and marketing them.
As with many other farm products, forest owners need to understand their forest’s unique qualities and potential. What product assortments does your forest contain? What are the respective volumes of construction timber, packaging, fencing material, pulpwood or indeed biomass material that can be considered in harvest planning? What is the timber worth?
Programme
To help answer these questions, management plans and forest inventory are central to informing good forest management decision-making, leading to the supply of what the market and society demand in the future as well as rewarding forest owners.
Forestry is a tax-efficient land use and awareness of the financial issues around timber sales is also vital, especially as the forest develops and approaches maturity.
The event includes:
- An outdoor demonstration organised by Forest Industries Ireland (FII), where attendees can view and discuss the quality of timber required by Irish sawmills. Like other farm-based products, the quality of the timber has a significant bearing on the market price offered.
- Short conference-style presentations from forestry experts offers perspectives, advice, and experiences of what is involved in harvesting conifers successfully. Presentations are followed by a Q&A session.
