Lignocellulose degradation (2017-2021)

Characterising lignocellulose degradation in mushroom substrate by Agaricus bisporus strains.

The aim of this project is to gain an understanding of the process of lignocellulose degradation in mushroom substrate that might shed light on why mushroom productivity declines in the third flush, despite significant nutrient content still remaining.

This project is looking at the ability of a number of different A. bisporus variants to degrade the lignocelluose component of mushroom substrate, and in particular characterising the enzymatic process involved.

The results from this project will provide information on the substrate degradation process by A. bisporus and provide new information which will inform strain breeding programmes.
