Employers are asked to support employees throughout their learning journey by engaging line managers and facilitating mentor one-to-ones on a regular basis. Employers will be issued with advice on this on induction.

The block release programme has been designed to minimise the impact of the apprentices absence for the employer. Testimonials

“I have found the programme very insightful and informative. The apprenticeship model is a great way of learning. Being able to put what you have learnt in college straight into practice at work really cements the learning.

Embedding this programme into the industry highlights that we shouldn’t just be paid from the shoulders down. The industry will move forward from this as committees and companies start to reap the rewards of investing in their staff.”

Mark Lew
Sportsturf Management Apprenticeship Graduate (Newlands Golf Club)

“As someone who had been outside the education environment for a number of years, I was quite apprehensive at the beginning. But I can honestly say the two years have been among the most rewarding of my life. The friendships and professional network we’ve built are invaluable. In an industry where you can often work independently, having that support system makes a huge difference.

Clubs are investing heavily in facilities, often supported by schemes like the Sports Capital Grant. With that investment comes higher expectations. To meet those standards, we need a skilled workforce — and that can only come from proper training and education.”

James Kiely
Sportsturf Management Apprenticeship Graduate (Kinsale Golf Club)

“What really stands out is the balance between classroom and practical learning. We weren’t just reading about soil science or irrigation systems; we were out visiting golf courses, racecourses, and stadia.

The facilities at Kildalton are great, but it’s the instruction and mentorship that make the difference. The staff don’t just teach from a book — they’ve lived the industry and take the time to make sure you understand the ‘why’ behind the work.

Throughout the apprenticeship, I picked up technical skills in drainage, turf nutrition, and machinery maintenance that I could bring straight back to my employer. It’s a great feeling to walk onto a golf course and have the confidence to troubleshoot a disease issue or calibrate a sprayer correctly.

The networking opportunities were another huge plus. I’ve met people from all over the industry, from local GAA clubs to high-end golf courses. If you’re willing to put in the work, the career prospects coming out of this programme are significant.

It’s been a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience that has genuinely set me up for a long-term career in the industry.”
