Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Dairy Herd Management
Duration:
1 year full time course offered at Kildalton College starting at the end of August and finishing in May the following year.
Course Structure and Content:
- The course consists of 16 weeks course work at Kildalton College and 16 weeks practical learning period with a Teagasc registered host dairy farm.
- Graduates of the Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture can apply for the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Dairy Herd Management.
- The aim of this course is to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and capabilities for the role of dairy herd technician/manager on their home farm or as an employed farm technician, herd manager. Each lecturer at Kildalton College carries responsibility for the farm eneterprise which they teach. This ensures that teaching is based on practical experience and good husbandry.
- Students who successfully complete the level 6 of this course meet the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption and DAFM Schemes.
Application Process:
Applications should be made on the Teagasc website for Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Diary Herd Management. Applications will be open in February 2024.
Fees:
The fees for this course are €990. Please note where an applicant is a holder of a major award at Level 6 or higher, an additional cost of €1,000 is applied.
Employment Prospects
On completion of the course many students go on to manage their own dairy farm or manage commercial dairy farms for others. Opportunities also exist in the agri business sector, food processing companies and with the agri services/supply sector.
Progression
Students wishing to continue their studies in the dairy production industry and a career as a farm manager can progress on to the Professional Diploma in Dairy Farm Management Level 7.
Graduates with Merit/Distinction may also apply to transfer into year 2 of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at SETU.
