Hedgerow Week 2024

How to plant and manage hedges

Friday, 30th August - Friday, 6th September 2024

National Hedgerow Week is a partnership between Teagasc and the Heritage Council. The week aims to raise awareness of the importance of hedges for agriculture, biodiversity and climate. Events are free to attend and are open to all. The events scheduled for the week are organised by Teagasc, Heritage and Biodiversity Officers in Local Authorities and others. All events are suitable for farmers, contractors and others.

Friday, 6th September

Join us for a hedge planting and best practice management demonstration of topped hedges and treeline hedges. Hedges have been planted over the past 3 years.

Saturday, 7th September

Hedgerow Management Workshop  |  10am - 1pm |  Clare

Irish Seed Savers Association, Scariff, Co. Clare.

Join us in exploring best practices for nature-friendly hedgerow management and learn about the value of hedgerows. The event will include talks from Barry O’Loughlin, Biodiversity Officer with Clare County Council; Catherine Keena, Hedgerow Expert with Teagasc; and Katie Smirnova and Eamonn McLoughlin from Hedgerows Ireland.

Hedge Laying Demonstration with Richard Markham | 11am - 1pm | Offaly

Join Richard Markum, experienced hedge layer to observe the technique and skills of laying hedges. This traditional skill has been used to manage hedgerows by making them stock proof and benefiting biodiversity rich and providing firewood in the process.

Come see this skill demonstrated with traditional hand tools by Richard at the Mount Briscoe Country House.

Sunday, 1st September

Foraging with Wild Food Mary  |  11am - 1pm  |  Offaly

Meeting point: Grand Canal Harbour, Edenderry, Co. Offaly. View Google Map location

Join Mary Bulfin for a foraging walk along the Grand Canal at Edenderry. Learn to identify edible plants and about some of their many other uses, including as herbal remedies. 

The walk will begin at the canal harbour and continue along the canal tow path before returning. The walk will be at a gentle pace on a sometimes-uneven surface. Family friendly. No dogs allowed.

Bat Walk  |  8pm  |  Offaly

Join Bat expert Anna Collins and the Kildare Bat Group on a bat walk around Tullamore Town Park and surrounds. Learn to use a bat detector to identify bats and observe bats on their nightly foraging trips. Family friendly event.
