Supporting Policy

Teagasc has contributed significantly to the policy debate on mitigation strategies for GHG emissions, mainly through the development of the Marginal Abatement Cost Curve published in 2019.  Teagasc has and will continue to provide the EPA with medium term projections of agricultural activity on an annual basis. Teagasc will provide analysis of the impact of agricultural and environmental policy on agricultural activity levels and these will continue to underpin future MACC assessments developed to reflect innovations in technology and farm practices.

Theme Priorities

  • Updating the Marginal Abatement Cost Curve as new technology is developed.
  • Development of life cycle assessment models for all farming enterprises.
  • Development of a carbon digital decision support tool.
  • Contribute to the scientific debate around metrics associated with climate change.
  • Develop an integrated land-use and agriculture model(s) to facilitate the analysis of scenarios to achieve climate neutrality 2050.

Immediate actions include

Regularly updating the MACC, in collaboration with the EPA providing science-based Irish specific emission factors in the national inventory, and contributing science based policy advice on climate change, agriculture and land use at a national and international level.
