ICONICA News Bulletin May 2024

Since the start of the project a lot has happened.

  • Seven sites are included in the experiment. A dataset harmonisation workshop was held, and the long-term experiment dataset harmonisation has been completed. On Six sites, soil has been sampled to a depth of 50 centimetres. Fractionations and carbon stocks have been determined, and chemical fractionation is still ongoing.
  • In both Germany and New Zealand, a mesocosm experiment including added labelled organic matter has been conducted using soil from Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand and Sweden. Analysing the data from these experiments using CNtrace is still ongoing.
  • In France, the different soils have been used for an in vitro manipulation to quantify C cycling potential in managed soil. The field campaign to sample GHG emissions has started in Ireland, and in New Zealand this has already been completed.
  • The most important information for the modellers has been collected and baseline runs using the different model are currently being performed.
  • During the EGU 2024 in Vienna last April, ICONICA was well represented. Members of the consortium were co-conveners for sessions at the EGU and there were also several posters and oral presentations from the results of the ICONICA project. An ICONICA workshop was also held on the final day of the EGU.
  • Between the 10th and 14th of June 2024 ICONICA will be represented during the EJP Soil Annual Science Days in Vilnius. ICONICA was also represented during the EJP Soil Annual Science Days 2022 and 2023
  • A wider audience will be reached will be reached during the Teagasc open day “Farming for a Better Future – Resilient and sustainable farming systems” held on the 16th of July in Wexford, Ireland. Generally, these events attract hundreds of people and are specifically targeting farmers and the general public. This audience was also reached during the “Farming for Soil health” open day held in 2023 in Wexford, Ireland.
