Article - Farmer adoption of nutrient management plans

Better nutrient management planning (NMP) can reduce the risk of nitrogen and phosphorus loss to water bodies, with positive outcomes for both Water Framework Directive water quality targets and farm level profitability. Researchers Michele McCormack and Cathal Buckley, using a technology acceptance model, investigated the importance of farmer perceptions in NMP adoption. The research was based on a survey of farmers across 12 agricultural catchments, six of which were in the Agricultural Catchments Programme. Surveyed farmers strongly believed that both the perceived value and perceived ease-of-use of an NMP are highly significant predictors of their future intention to use.
