Video - Chief Scientist Per-Erik Mellander on catchment research
Across six sites in Ireland the catchments programme has been collecting soils, groundwater, surface water and weather data. In this video, programme Chief Scientist Per-Erik Mellander describes how this high resolution monitoring of the water quality increases the understanding of nutrient loss stating “We have an outdoor lab – bankside analyser - that takes the sample from the stream and analyses it for phosphorous and nitrate and it does this on a sub-hourly basis, so five to six times per hour and by now we have almost a decade of sub-hourly measurements in all the catchments.” Filming by Frank Reid was in the Castledockerell catchment and the picture shows Per-Erik and Aoife Stafford, then catchment technician.
