What do I need to know about the Beef Data and Genomics Programme?
Over 24,000 suckler herds across the country are participating in the Beef Data & Genomics Programme 1 & 2. Following the latest BDGP genomic evaluation, Teagasc Beef Specialist, Catherine Egan highlights the key dates that you need to be aware of to ensure that you comply with the programme.
If you are a participant in BDGP 1, 2020 is the final year of participation. There are a number of key dates that you need to be aware of to ensure you comply with the programme. The latest BDGP genomic evaluation took place on the 4th August 2020. This was a significant evaluation for many herds as a lot of animals received their first genomic evaluation. On the 31st of October 2020 you must have 50% of the reference number of animals, genotyped 4 or 5 star on the Replacement Index. They must be at least 16 months of age, so born before the 30th June 2019. For BDGP II herds, on the 31st of October 2020 you must have 20% of the reference number of animals, genotyped 4 or 5 star on the Replacement Index. They must be at least 16 months of age on this date. If you did not have enough genotyped 4/5 star females you should check now to see if more animals have become eligible.
What is my eligibility status?
You can check your current BDGP eligibility status through your ICBF account (here). Under view profiles, go to BDGP eligibility. The profile is a live picture of where your herd stands on that day. Any areas that your herd is not compliant on will be highlighted in red. ICBF will also be posting out a copy of the report for your farm. The ICBF & Department of Agriculture Food & the Marine (DAFM) are phoning all herds that are not on course to meet the 31st October 2020 target to see what their plans are to meet the target and if they need any help. Letters are also being sent to these herds explaining their options and what they need to check when buying females to hit the 31st October 2020 target. The penalty if you do not meet this requirement is 140% of gross annual payment.
What if I want to genotype more cows/heifers in my herd?
The 9th September 2020 is the final date to have samples returned to the laboratory in order for an animal to get a genomic evaluation before the end of the programme. There are two more evaluations that can be counted towards BDGP. These will be published on 6th October 2020 and 24th November 2020. The November evaluation is after the 31st Oct deadline but the DAFM will allow this evaluation to be counted but the animals still have to be in your herd on 31st October 2020. You can arrange this be calling ICBF.
When has my Carbon Navigator to be completed by?
Your Carbon Navigator has to be completed to avoid delay in payment in December. It can be completed on-line under your ICBF log in or post back your form if you have not already done so.
What should I do if I am unsure of my current BDGP status or what the best course of action is to meet my target?
You should speak to your local Teagasc Advisor or ICBF can also be contacted to discuss with you and can tell you over the phone what your current BDGP eligibility status is as well as give advice on the best course of action to meet the requirements.
