Kevin Carey Teagasc Sheep BETTER Farm programme

In recent months, Teagasc have selected Kevin Carey, Belmullet, Co Mayo to participate as a monitor farm on the Teagasc sheep BETTER farm programme. Kevin is farming 160 ewes both on lowland and commonage lands along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The farm is finishing a lot of their lambs from grass and from multi-sward species. The farm is selling their lambs directly under the brand name ‘Atlantic Erris Lamb’.

As part of the programme, a full physical and financial plan will be developed through the Teagasc Sheep Department led by Francis Campion, Teagasc Athenry in conjunction with Thomas Kelly, Teagasc Ballina who is the local advisor in this area. It is expected that regular lamb performance measurements will be taken on the farm along with the farm recording grass growth rates which will then be uploaded to PastureBase Ireland as part of the programme. It is expected that this information will be a great source of information for the many hill sheep farmers in this area and across Ireland and information will be shared both locally and nationally on the various platforms over the next four years as part of the programme.

This short video featured earlier this Autumn as part of very successful Virtual Sheep Week which ran from the 21st of September to the 25th of September.
