Beef Data Genomics Programme (BDGP) Rollover
The Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine has issued letters to farmer participants in the 2021 transitional BDGP scheme, informing them of the option to further extend contracts for a rollover of one further year into 2022. Catherine Egan, Teagasc Beef Specialist, has advice on what to do
The application process commenced on 18th November and stays open up to 5.00pm on Monday, 20th December 2021.
The application to extend may be submitted by logging on to www.agfood.ie . The application may be submitted by you or by your Advisor up to 5.00pm on Monday, 20th December 2021. If you do not apply by Wednesday, 8th December and you are signed up to receive text messages from the DAFM, you will receive a text message on Friday 10th December 2021, asking if you wish to extend BDGP participation by one year.
The options to reply are either ‘DAFM Y’ (for Yes I want to extend my BDGP contract into 2022) or ‘DAFM N’ (for No I do not want to extend my BDGP contract into 2022). The participant or Agent operating on his/her behalf will have seventy-two (72) hours from the time the SMS is sent during which they must reply. A confirmation text will issue in reply if the Department has successfully received a response.

Teagasc National Beef Conference goes Virtual
This year’s Teagasc National Beef Conference is online with a series of two virtual events to take place on Monday 6th and Wednesday 8th December at 8.00pm each day. Teagasc will bring you the latest beef research and the best technical advice for beef farmers with a live, hour-long, interactive webinar each evening.
On Monday, 6th December at 8.00pm join us for the first session which will be moderated by Aidan Murray, Teagasc Beef Specialist.
Hear from Professor Frank O'Mara, Teagasc Director as he takes us through Meeting our Climate Obligations - a Pathway for the Beef Industry. Professor Frank O’Mara has taken up the role of Director of Teagasc on 1 October 2021. He joined Teagasc in 2006 and was Director of Research since 2009. He is an agricultural scientist and sustainable livestock systems specialist, with over 30 years’ experience in technical and senior managerial capacities in Agri-Food research, education and development institutions. He also contributes to various national and EU committees and bodies, review panels and scientific advisory boards, and became President of the European Animal Task Force in 2020. This will be followed by Chris Daly of the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) who will outline Commercial Beef Value: A new selection tool for non-breeding beef farmers.
Return on day two Wednesday 8th December at 8.00pm for the second session which will be moderated by Matt O'Keeffe, Editor of the Irish Farmers Monthly and presenter and producer of a farm show on KCLR (Kilkenny/Carlow Local Radio). Hear from Paul Crosson, Teagasc Beef Enterprise Leader about the Implications of slaughter age for beef cattle on GHG emissions. Day two will conclude with an interactive forum chaired by Matt O'Keeffe. The interactive forum will be featuring Kevin Hanrahan, Head of Teagasc Rural Economy Development Programme, Frank O’Mara, Teagasc Director and Paul Crosson, Teagasc Beef Enterprise Leader.
We will have a variety of contributors sharing their expertise and experience including Teagasc researchers, specialists and industry experts. All sessions are live and there is an opportunity for viewers to pose their questions for the panellists. The online Teagasc Beef Conference is free to join, but registration is required beforehand.
