Diary dates: Spring beef grass walks

Diary dates: Spring beef grass walks

The Teagasc Beef Specialist team, along with the local advisory service, is hosting a series of spring beef grass walks across the country.

Topics up for discussion include: nutrient management planning; establishing and managing clover; spring grassland management and Signpost; and fertiliser for grazing and silage.

Regulatory changes have created a heightened need for nutrient management planning on all farms, but particularly those with a grassland stocking rate above 130kg of organic nitrogen per hectare. Speakers at these events will highlight how creating a nutrient management plan allows for the efficient use of nutrients within your farm gate, but also the compliance angle by remaining within the prescribed limits for nitrogen and phosphorous.

Additionally, a focus will be placed on spreading the appropriate fertiliser – both product and quantities – when growing grazing and silage swards this spring. The events will also focus on how to manage grazing over the spring months, highlighting the importance of spring grass in terms of both animal performance and farm profitability.

A focus will also be placed on clover. The host farmers will share their experiences of establishing and managing clover and the strategies being implemented to maintain its presence within the sward.
