Winter Finishing Mart Event


Join us on Tuesday, 13th September at 7:30pm (sharp) in Kilkenny Mart, Cillin Hill, Dublin Road, Kilkenny, R95 A4VP, for a Winter Finishing Mart Event. This is a must-attend event for all beef farmers. Terry Carroll, Teagasc beef advisor, Kilkenny has all the details here

Teagasc in conjunction with IFA are holding a Winter Finishing Event in Cillín Hill Matt in Kilkenny next Tuesday evening, 13th September at 7.30pm.

There are four speakers on the night; Paul Crossan and Mark McGee from Teagasc Grange as well as Brendan Golden, IFA Beef chairperson and Jonathan Forbes from Kepak.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Economics of Beef Finishing
    Paul Crosson, Beef Enterprise Leader, Teagasc
  • Optimising Performance for Beef Cattle
    Mark McGee, Principal Researcher, Teagasc
  • Farmers Perspective of Beef Finishing
    Brendan Golden, IFA Beef Chairman
  • Market Situation and Outlook
    Jonathan Forbes, Kepak

Chairperson for the event, Terry Carroll Teagasc Kilkenny, says that the Financial and Physical Targets required by Winter Finishers will be detailed on the night.

On the Financial side, Paul Crossan will go through the Budgets for Winter Finishing and focus on the costs associated with finishing this autumn as well as the resultant beef price needed by the farmer.  Also, figures will be shown where the choice is made to finish from grass.

The Physical targets around performance, such as diet type and composition, housing space, environment and other management issues will be covered by Mark McGee.

The second half of the night will be more of a focus on farmers at present and their concerns facing into this winter and beyond.  Brendan Golden will have first-hand experience from his travels around the country.

Finally, Jonathan Forbes of Kepak will outline the current market situation.  More importantly how he and Kepak see the next few months unfolding, and into next year, regarding markets and prices for beef farmers.
