Do you suspect herbicide resistance on your farm?

Do you suspect herbicide resistance on your farm?

Avail of the free herbicide resistance testing from Oak Park to test suspect resistant weeds, of Blackgrass, Italian ryegrass, Wild oats, Bromes, Annual meadow-grass, Poppy, Chickweed, and Corn marigold.

We encourage growers/advisors to submit ANY grass and broad-leaved weeds that you suspect to be herbicide-resistant.

  • Resistant weeds tend to show up in discrete irregular patches with a mix of dead plants of all the same species.
  • Collect seeds when they are ripe and easily fall-off the head
  • Sample sufficient seed quantities
  • Fill-out the herbicide resistance testing form
  • Send paper bags of dry seeds along with completed form to Teagasc Oak Park Crops Research Centre, Carlow
  • The resistance testing form and seed collection instruction is accessible here

According to Teagasc researcher Vijaya Bhaskar, testing lets you know the best herbicide, that will offer immediate control of your weed, along with integrated weed management strategies appropriate for your farm.

Remember, >70% of blackgrass and Italian ryegrass samples tested from 2022 harvest were resistant to both ACCase and ALS herbicides. We also found poppies resistant to ALS and hormone (2,4-D) type. As new cases of herbicide resistance pop up, there is no substitute for resistance testing.

Good sample collection is key for resistance testing.
