Rule changes for grazing cover crops and oilseed rape planting season
New rules brought in this year under Conditionality GAEC 6 will exclude tillage farmers who do not have grassland from grazing cover crops, according to Shay Phelan, a Tillage Specialist in Teagasc.
On this week’s Tillage Edge podcast, Shay outlines the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) rules which must be complied with to graze cover crops and what the DAFM inspectors will be looking for on farm.
Oilseed rape planting season is upon us and Shay talks about the various characteristics which farmers should look for in varieties, such as light leaf spot resistance, pod shatter resistance, lodging resistance etc.
Also, a date for your diary is the Teagasc Crops Forum, which takes place on September 8 in the Kilashee Hotel, Naas. For more information on this event, click here.
