Spring Malting Barley Series - Nitrogen Rates and Timings

The first video in our spring malting barley series focuses on nitrogen rates and timing. Eoin Lyons, Teagasc/ Boortmalt Joint Programme Advisor discusses nitrogen rate and timing of application for this year's spring malting barley crops in order to optimise grain protein at harvest time.

This series will cover key malt agronomy throughout the year.

Three take home messages in relation to Nitrogen application on spring malting barley are:

  1. Apply Nitrogen at the 1-2 leaf stage or when tramlines are visible of crop growth
  2. Apply 150 Kg/Ha of Nitrogen on brewing barley and 130 Kg/Ha on distilling barley
  3. In situations where there is a possibility of high level of Nitrogen within soil, reduce levels of total Nitrogen by 15 Kg/Ha in order to maintain grain protein at harvest time.
