Clonakilty Agricultural College June Dairy Update

Clonakilty College Dairy Farm Unit is now on week 9 of the breeding season. AI has ceased and stock bulls are now running with the cows. James Daunt, Dairy teacher, provides the June update on Dairying at the College. He talks about current milk results, reseeding and more in a short video here

We will have more results next month when breeding is over. Some cows are on grass only diet and those on the trial are on a grass clover diet.

 Current milk results

  • Cows are producing approximately 21.8 litres per cow
  • Butterfat    4.35%
  • Protein      3.49%
  • SCC        86,000
  • TBC          3,000

Grassland Management

Growth last week (week beginning 15th June) was 70 kg/DM/Ha, with demand now at 64 kg/Dm/Ha. The cover/cow on the trial groups is 145kgDm/Ha, and the pre-grazing cover is at 1,450 kg/DM/Ha.

Fertiliser - 21 units protected urea/acre after grazing.

First cut silage was completed on 7th June with good mowing conditions resulting in a heavy crop which was picked up afte lunch on the following day.

Reseeding was carried out on 16th June. Two cultivars were sown as monocultures. The 2 varieties used were Ballyvoy (diploid) and Gracehill (tetraploid). In the clover paddocks a 50:50 mix of Chieftan and Crusader Clover were sown at a rate of 5kg/ha.

Look out for our Colleges next update.
