Dara Killeen is a new entrant to dairy farming. Dara formed a Registered Farm Partnership with his father on the family farm in Eyrecourt, Co. Galway. He began looking into dairying in 2017 and converted from drystock to dairy in 2019. In 2020 the Killeens milked 150 cows.
Dara speaks about the labour aspect of the farm - summarising it into 2 people full-time. He has a young herd of cows and is happy with the fertility levels on the farm. He started by buying the best stock he could afford. He speaks of availing of the TAMS II grant aid for the new building work required and really utilising what was there on the farm also. Dara outlines the importance for him of maximising the use of existing sheds and facilities when converting to dairying. He is farming on a very dry farm and this allows for a long grazing season.
